Resident Evil is a 2002 science fiction zombie horror movie written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez. It is the first movie in the Resident Evil movie franchise and it’s based on the Capcom survival horror video game series Resident Evil. I loved Resident Evil, the video game and that was why I watched the movie. Video games very rarely translate into good movies. It had been a long time since I saw this movie so I watched it again to do this Resident Evil movie review.
Resident Evil Movie Review
The movie starts off in a futuristic laboratory deep underground called the Hive. It’s run by the Umbrella Corporation. Fans of the video game series will already know that this company, or the people in charge, are up to all types of research and experimentation, from cosmetics and foods to pharmaceuticals to bio-engineering to genetic engineering and bio-weapons research. Nefarious is a word that would describe some of their practices quite well. Umbrella Corp is the stereotypical evil corporation.

Most of the movie is set in the Hive and the main story is about these Umbrella corporation contractors and employees trying to get out. Some very dangerous chemicals had been released and the AI computer which controls the Hive is trying to stop it from reaching the surface. So the movie is a battle of minds; humans versus A.I. That’s not the only problem, though. As we find out later, the chemical that was released into the hive turns people into zombies. And those zombies want to eat our protagonists. Hey, it’s based on a video game.
Milla Jovovich plays Alice, who is the main character in all the live-action Resident Evil movies so you have to know she is going to survive everything that’s thrown at her. She’s originally a model and the only other movie I have seen her in was the Fifth Element. I didn’t really have high expectations for her as an actress. But the fact is, she can act and she has the physical presence to pull off being a badass.
So Resident Evil is a movie based on a video game but it’s not terrible. That is saying something. It’s not a great movie either, though. The story is nothing special and sometimes the dialog is adolescent. I’m not sure why the character played by Michelle Rodriguez has to talk like a man. Perhaps the role was originally supposed to be a man. Whatever the reason, it just seems weird. The fact that most of the movie is set in the laboratory is a weak point for me as I can’t easily relate to it and I guess this is true for most people.
The special effects are pretty good and things look pretty realistic. The acting is mostly good and would have seemed better if they had better dialog. There are a few scares and a fairly constant sense of tension. This movie and movie series has its fans. I wouldn’t put myself in that category but I am interested enough to watch them all. They are not something that I want to rent, though. Luckily they have been on TV and I can watch most of them on Amazon Prime.
The T-virus created by Umbrella Corporation and it was released through an act of corporate sabotage.
How to kill the zombies
Chop off the head, crush the skull and of course, a bullet to the head will do it. Zombie dogs can be disposed of in the same manner but the genetically engineered monster called the licker is a bit tougher to kill.
Help me! I don’t remember. I don’t remember them ever saying zombie so my guess is that they are called the infected.
