This is my third time to post about Zombieland. You would think that it was my favorite movie or something. First I posted the Zombieland trailer, which you can now see above, then I posted about the doomed Zombieland TV show, and now I am doing a Zombieland review. Just to be clear. This is a review of the 2009 Zombieland movie directed by Ruben Fleischer.
I originally watched this movie quite a few years ago and I had fond memories of it. Zombieland is a comedy rather than a horror movie. There are zombies but it’s never really scary and it’s not even that gory despite the disposal of many a zombie. And I remembered that it was funny and surprising. I also remember thinking that it was a little short. It’s just under 90 minutes.
For this Zombieland review though I needed to watch it again. I was looking forward it and I was expecting to enjoy it was much as I had the previous time but unfortunately for me, I didn’t. It has a great cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin. It was such a great cast that it might have been one of the reasons the Zombieland TV show failed. There is still talk of a movie sequel but without the original cast, I don’t think it would be well received. I almost forgot to mention and excellent Bill Murray cameo. There is one. Zombieland is a 2009 movie.
The characters are named after the places they come from because Tallahassee doesn’t want to get too close. The story is narrated by Columbus.
- Jesse Eisenberg as Columbus
- Woody Harrelson as Tallahassee
- Emma Stone as Wichita/Krista
- Abigail Breslin as Little Rock
At the beginning of the movie we learn that there has been a zombie apocalypse and during the movie we learn of the rules that Columbus has created in order to survive the new world. Here are some of them.
#1 Cardio – You need to be able to run
#2 The Double-tap – Shoot those zombies twice just to be sure
#3 Beware of bathrooms
Don’t be a hero
#22 When in doubt, know your way out
#31 Check the back seat
#32 Enjoy the little things (learned this one from Tallahassee)
I reiterate. This is not a horror movie. This is a comedy. It is a zombie movie though and a pretty good one. The zombie make-up is awesome and the special effects are good. The acting is top-notch and if you like a bit of romance, it’s got that too. The first time you watch this movie, it will leave you wanting more so if you haven’t watched it yet, I recommend it. Some of the fun of this movie is not knowing what to expect so if you have already seen it, it loses some of its charm.
It’s amazing how quickly things turn from bad to total shitstorm.
A mutated strain of mad cow disease mutated into “mad person disease” that became “mad zombie disease” which overran the entire United States population.
How to kill the zombies
A bullet or a strong blow to the head. I think decapitation works.
Zombies, zombies, zombies.
